Hola José,

I think you're absolutely right. I've been devoting most of my energy to discussing the security measures in place and not enough to stressing what an incredible educational tool online communities can be.

Of course, all our security measures will stay in place and students will be regularly reminded of them, but, next time i'm asked about security, i'll pull out both our "security checklist" and my data on improving test scores.

Te agradezco la respuesta y, por supuesto, el blog.

Saludos,
JP

Hola Juan Pablo,

The safety of pupils is paramount. There are some really good apps out there like Diigo, Glogster and Edmodo that "do" education really well and therefore pupil safety is of no concern.

However, there are some other good apps that we would like to use, even if they are not specifically designed for educational use.

As long as teachers educate their pupils about online safety - no real names, no personal details, no visible email addresses, etc. - then there is, in my opinion, nothing to worry about.

Parents - and school management - will feel then that you are taking all necessary precautions.

The key, however, is to demonstrate that the safe and effective use of technology improves teaching and learning. Once parents realise these tools facilitate learning they'll be asking you why you don't use them more often!!

Question: in using online technology in the classroom, how do you address parent concerns about online safety? At least in my case, despite a good number of security measures in place, initial parent reactions are sometimes (even if not often) concerns over safety.

I think this is an excellent use of technology. It allows the students to excel at their own rate with their modern language. Also, being a language student myself it does greatly assist students when they hear the language in an actual everyday situation. Using language in context, especially from it's country of origin, helps to learn the language more efficiently.

Seems you have done well to seamlessly integrate technology into language learning in Nottingham. As you say, it is the ability of technology to provide avenues for various learning styles and the engagement that it brings which the students seem to love. I think technology is made for language learning and vice versa.

While I'm here, fantastic work to you and all the contributors to the "Technology in modern foreign languages" ebook. Essential reading for all language teachers. I apologise for not getting back to you with a blog post - January disappeared quite quickly.
