Technology in Modern Foreign Languages – A Practitioner’s Perspective

Originally published as a series of blog posts titled Technology in Modern Foreign Languages , this collection of articles explores how teachers are successfully incorporating the use of new technologies into their classroom practice with a focus on enhancing teaching and learning.

My most sincere thanks to each of the contributors to this collection of articles who have selflessly taken time out from their busy teaching jobs to collaborate in this project and share their experiences in using technology in the modern foreign languages classroom.

José is Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Nottingham High School, a secondary school in England, and is interested in the way technology can be used to enhance and transform teaching and learning. José has been curating Box of Tricks since 2007 and holds a MA in ICT and Education.

Thanks for the great list. I’m going to use some of these resources in my EFL classes and to help me practice a few foreign languages on my own. Using images & Google image search really helped me with Japanese vocabulary.

Excellent series of articles, José! And thanks for uploading the series to Scribd. I have linked to your blog thread in Section 4.2 of Module 1.1 at the ICT4LT site:

Have you considered starting a thread on virtual worlds? Some schools, e.g. John Hanson School, are already using Second Life, but so far I am not aware of any school that is using it to teach MFL. See this Teachers TV video about John Hanson School:

On the other hand, The British COuncil is running a very successful programme in Second Life for teaching English to 13-17 year-olds:

Text to speech software programs are extremely useful for language teaching and learning, especially for teaching pronunciation and listening skills. For example, Panopreter Plus ( http://www.panopreter.com ), it’s a good tool for Windows 7 or vista users. The software reads text and converts the text to mp3 and wave audio files with the voice of Microsoft Anna. Best of all, it’s very simple to use.
