Free comic strip creating website

As well as classroom rules posters, I intend to start using it to practise role-plays and to introduce vocabulary, perhaps leaving the speech bubbles blank and ask the pupils to come up with captions

Recently I have been interested in using comics to liven up my teaching and my marking. A couple of days ago I was writing about Comic Life,  a piece of software that allows you to create comic strips using photos stored in your computer. Well, today what brings me to you is www.toondoo.com a website that allows the user to create their own comic strips and even comic books using the templates provided or using your own pictures.

Above is a screenshot of the interface that allows you to pick characters, backgrounds, speechbubbles, etc. What I really like about it is that if you can’t find a character that you want to use you can either create your own using the TRAITR widget on the top right and then save it to use again in the future or you can upload your own character and pictures.

I have to admit that this is not probably the best use of time in the ICT room, since the pupils are likely to get carried away by all the changing shapes, hair colour and facial expressions, not to mention all the rude content in the speech bubbles! What I have done is use this website to design posters to put up in my classroom with some classroom rules. Here are a couple of examples (I am sorry, it’s all in Spanish, but you get the idea!):

Raise you hand if you want to speak

Don’t talk when your teacher is talking

For now, I am sticking to teacher use. As well as classroom rules posters, I intend to start using it to practise role-plays and to introduce vocabulary, perhaps leaving the speech bubbles blank and ask the pupils to come up with captions Have I got news for you – style. Perhaps, as suggested in my previous post, it could make a nice little homework project. Did I mention it’s free?

Did you create your posters with Toondoo? How did you get them to print so you can use them? I right clicked and printed one slide, but it was very tiny.

Yes Yolanda. I also right clicked to save the image file in my computer. Then I used an image editing programme called Gimp to make it slightly larger. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the response. I right clicked too, but I don’t have GIMP, so I couldn’t enlarge it without it being fuzzy. Is this software hard to use? I went to their website, but I saw no turorial.

Sorry Yolanda to take so long to reply but I have been away on holiday :)
Gimp is really easy to use, it only takes a bit of playing around to get used to it. If you are already familiar with photo editing programmes such as Photoshop, then you will have no trouble at all.

Can you help? I can’t print the cartoon strips even when I right click on them. Would love to use them – how does it work?

    Hello Tricia,

Toondoo does not have a print option, but you can circumvent this by saving the picture to your hard drive and then use a photo preview programme to print it.

I do this regularly and never have had a problem. Follow this link to see how.

Wow! Thanks for this tidbit. I was looking for a free alternative to Comic Life and found your post. Thanks for the tip!

Free software has its limitations. When software developers create a reasonably priced program like Comic Life, it’s worth spending the extra dollars for a stable, replicable environment with considerably more flexibility than toondoon.com. Web 2.0 tools are great, but you get what you pay for.

@Sandy Thanks for you comment. I agree with you that Comic Life is a superb product (although another free web 2.0 tool called Comiqs comes really close).

However, I would like to point out that Web 2.0 tools have many advantages over licensed software, for example, 1) my students can use Web 2.0 tools both at school and at home – this allows me to use them at school and to set exciting homework activities; 2) there is no software to install, thus bypassing any possible technical difficulties; and 3) there is no license to pay, so the tools can be used on any (on every) computer, therefore naturally increasing the number of students, as well, as teachers that have access to them.

So, as you can see, licensed software has its limitations too!

Looks like a great product. My partner is a teacher i will show it her, probably after having a little mess around on it first. This could be a great method of teaching primary kids.
